Frequently asked questions

What qualifications do I need?

You should have a valid driver’s license, a safe and dependable driving history, reliable communication, and a genuine commitment to student safety and punctuality. Additional screening, vehicle, insurance, training, and state or client requirements may apply to the assignment.

How do I apply to become a One KC Express driver?

Start with the One KC Express driver application. Tell us your service area, availability, experience, and the type of transportation work you are interested in. Recruiting will contact you about next steps and any documents needed.

What happens after I submit an application?

The team reviews your application and may request qualification documents, screening information, vehicle or insurance information, and required training. Once the applicable steps are complete, operations can discuss route availability and driver-app or dispatch orientation.

What vehicle do I need?

Vehicle requirements depend on the assignment. One KC Express may use approved student-transportation vehicles, accessible equipment, or an approved personal vehicle program where applicable. Do not transport students in a vehicle that has not been approved for your assignment.

How are routes and trips assigned?

Routes and trips are coordinated through One KC Express operations and the approved Driver App or work channel for your assignment. Availability depends on service area, student needs, schedule, eligibility, and client demand. Review the current trip details before starting work and contact Dispatch if anything is unclear.

What are my core safety responsibilities?
  • Complete the required vehicle and safety checks before transporting a student.
  • Use seat belts, child restraints, wheelchair securements, and other equipment as trained.
  • Follow the approved route and all school, district, client, and Dispatch instructions.
  • Never leave a student unattended or change the approved drop-off plan without direction.
  • Call 911 first for an emergency, then notify the appropriate Dispatch or One KC Express contact and complete the required report.
What should I prepare before recruiting contacts me?

Be ready to discuss your service area, availability, driving and caregiving experience, vehicle access, accessibility experience, and preferred assignment type. Do not send Social Security numbers, identity documents, medical information, or financial information through an ordinary email or public form. One KC Express will provide secure instructions for documents that are actually required.

What safety and conduct standards apply?
  • No drug or alcohol use while driving.
  • No cell-phone use while the vehicle is moving except an approved hands-free or emergency procedure.
  • No discrimination, retaliation, unsafe touching, or behavior that compromises student dignity.
  • Stay calm, follow training, and contact Dispatch when a student needs support or a situation is escalating.
  • Follow the approved student handoff, route, and equipment instructions; do not improvise a destination or release plan.
What is different about partner-program assignments?

Some partner-program work may involve students with disabilities, special needs, or other individualized transportation needs. Additional background, drug-screening, DMV, safety-training, vehicle-inspection, app, state, district, or client requirements may apply. One KC Express will identify the requirements before assigning that work; partner-program requirements are not automatically requirements for every One KC Express assignment.

What is different about specialized student-transportation assignments?

Specialized partner-program work may include special-needs, McKinney-Vento, out-of-district, hard-to-serve, or wheelchair-accessible trips. Drivers may need additional training in behavior awareness, de-escalation, special equipment, student-specific support information, and state, local, district, or client requirements. One KC Express will explain the applicable track before assignment.

What should I do if a student is upset or a trip becomes difficult?

Stay calm, protect the student and other passengers, follow your training and the student-specific instructions provided for the trip, and contact Dispatch through the approved workflow. Do not argue, punish, diagnose, or use unapproved physical contact. Call 911 first if there is an immediate emergency, then notify One KC Express and complete the required report.

How do wheelchair or accessibility assignments work?

Only drivers who are approved and trained for the assignment should operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, securements, restraints, or other accessibility equipment. Complete the equipment check before the trip and stop the process if equipment is damaged, missing, or unclear. Contact Operations for instructions rather than improvising.

Is SMS consent required to apply or work?

No. One KC Express SMS is optional and is not a condition of employment, contractor onboarding, applying, transportation service, or purchase. You can opt in through the separate SMS Consent form or the separate unchecked checkbox in the driver application. Providing a phone number or submitting an application does not automatically enroll you.

Who can help if I have a question?

Contact One KC Express at 816-477-1375 or contact@schooltransit.com. For an active trip, use the approved Dispatch or Driver App workflow first.
